Note from Jean
Hi ${first_name}
If you listen to the media you hear a fear of the economy and a fear of going green. Don't let yourself catch it. Have you noticed that every time the Prime Minister opens his mouth he seems to be talking us down? He says it is going to be very difficult to survive the recession. He says it is going to be very difficult to reduce our carbon footprint.
I think talking us down as a nation should be regarded as almost a form of treason. It is so damaging. Australia is the country that the OECD said is best placed in the world to cope with economic problems so let’s not destroy that by negative thinking.
Do you remember the distorting mirrors in fun parks? If you only ever looked at those distorting mirrors would you get a real view of yourself? Or would you get depressed? Talking us down is like continually looking into a distorting mirror. We can’t see our real situation.
We talk and believe ourselves into a downward spiral, then get surprised when others do the same and we say “oh well we knew it was bad”. In fact we should say “lets start being positive and push the spiral up as the result of positive attitudes and actions”. We need to think about thriving not surviving.
Going green actually reduces waste and that includes reducing wasted money! I am unable to see why it is difficult. Does it seem logical to you to stop wasting energy and other expensive resources to help your business can prosper?
Why don’t you reduce your carbon footprint or implement an environmental management system and start preventing waste and being proactive to beat the doom and fear.
How can I help you ${first_name}?
The core of my business now is online consultancy and I offer you a range of options.
I do some offline one-on-one consultancy as I have done for 11 years. Increasingly I either combine or replace this with online consultancybecause it works so effectively and saves you time and money. My main consultancy service is to help you to implement ISO 14001 with minimal paper and with an emphasis on keeping it simple. Because I believe that management systems need to be fully integrated, I also help you with ISO 9001, occupational safety (AS/NZS 4801) and HACCP (ISO 22000). If it is not simple it won’t work.
If you have a larger business with a variety of departments or locations, or you are a group of businesses or an association I would suggest that you consider starting with an onsite workshop for either half or a full day involving a committed leader from each section or business. Then we continue to work together online with small bite sized downloads each one to two weeks followed by a teleconference. We may well follow this up with another onsite workshop near the end of the consultancy to pull it all together. This is very much more time and cost effective than traditional consultancy and it gets the various departments involved far more than is otherwise the case. They take ownership and build inhouse capacity for ongoing system management.
I am in this business because I am passionate about helping businesses to be both greener and more efficient. If you sometimes feel overwhelmed and short of time in your business a simple and effective system will help. The trick is to keep it simple.
The benefits for you of online consultancy are:
- You have no time out of your workplace so that it is easyto fit into your busy life
- Some clients have told me that they feel safe tackling something new but still in their own place
- You have no travel (and nor do I) resulting in less greenhouse emissions
- You get much of the work as downloadable audio files that you can listen to while doing something else, it is very time saving
- plus the fact that working in groups leverages both your time and mine more effectively and I do pass the savings on to you so that you pay less.
- You get to interact with a group of other businesses so that by sharing your experience and problems you learn more and look at your business from a broader perspective.
- You end up with a deep understanding of how your system works so that it is far more sustainable than a system implemented by consultant coming in and doing it for you
- It does not matter where you are located so long as you have access to a phone each week. If you do not have broadband, I will post you a CD each module instead of the downloads. I also have international clients. Location does not matter online.
- It is ideal for really busy people because you only have 1 hour of fixed time commitment each week.
There is still time to join a group doing integrated ISO 14001 environmental management and ISO 9001 quality management starting this week. If you want to join but only want a single system (9001 or 14001) you will still fit in well. You will just have a week or two off near the start. Contact me by phoning 61 8 8364 5741 or fax 618 8311 5233 and here are the website links
YES I accept credit cards (Australian Visa and MasterCard or PayPal internationally) and also monthly payments

This week South Australia’s government is suggesting that public servants work shorter hours to reduce costs in this economic crisis. Last year New York’s Mayor suggested having flexible hours with staggered start and stop times to reduce peak hour gridlock. In June 2008 the state of Utah had state employees switch to a four day week in August with longer hours Monday to Thursday and offices closed on Fridays to save on utility expenses and employees would save on fuel. This of course, would also reduce emissions from energy and transport, apparently equivalent of removing 600 cars annually.
Here is a snippet from a government media release this week. For the first time, Australia will invest $26.8 million in a major research effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock - the nation’s third largest source of emissions, including methane. There are around 85 million sheep, 28 million cows and 3 million farmed goats.
Big business like Coca-Cola Co. now disclose the amount of water they use in financial reports, in an attempt to show investors they can confront threats to their water supply, according to a study released Thursday by the nonprofit Pacific Institute. But dozens of high-tech companies, farms and soda bottlers have lost millions because they didn’t foresee the risks posed by droughts and floods tied to global warming, researchers found in a survey of 121 companies in water-intensive industries.
The Salisbury Council in South Australia has been very creatively managing its stormwater for the last 15 years or so. It has built a series of very impressive wetlands and storing it in underground aquifers. They have been conducting a four year trial converting the water to drinking standard. This has been funded by CSIRO and others. They can supply 106 gigalitres of drinking water, one third of Adelaide’s supply.
The Water Security Minister in SA does not support the use of treated stormwater for drinking. She said there is an unacceptable risk. I am completely bemused. What on earth does she think the River Murray is? Or any other river for that matter but natural stormwater drainage! ...............
The short answer is because I was asked to by my clients. But it took longer than that to happen. I have been running this consultancy for 11 years now, helping businesses to identify environmental and other problems and build simple and effective systems to manage those risks.
I was working one-on-one with larger companies, major car component factories, marinas and the tuna industry, helping them get ISO 14001 and other systems. I was approached by smaller businesses asking me how they could do the same thing without such a high price – so groups were born! Then they asked....
While computer users need to watch their carbon emissions, the manufacturers have other emission issues. Chip makers release sulfur hexafluoride and other fluorinated gases
The state of California has enacted mandatory rules controlling greenhouse gases and these will impact on semiconductor chip manufacturers
